There are two primary causes for a corked thigh known as Intramuscular Contusion, and Intermuscular Contusion. Intramuscular Contusion is when the muscle tears inside the sheath of your thigh muscles. Due to its enclosure and the pressure applied by the surrounding muscles, the internal bleeding may not last very long and usually stops after a couple of hours. Unfortunately, the excess liquid cannot drain from within the enclosed sheath and causes the pain and a considerable loss in motor function in your entire leg. The pain will last but there is typically no bruising and it may take multiple weeks for a complete recovery. Different types of Massage Therapies and Physiotherapies are recommended for a faster recovery time and to ensure that the muscle heals correctly and does not become misaligned in the process. The second cause, Intermuscular Contusion is when the muscle and some of the sheath muscles that surround it tear. This type of internal tear may bleed for extended periods of time and will take longer if proper care is not applied. It is important to keep ice on the affected area to control the swelling. Overall an intermuscular tear will heal faster than an intramuscular tear due to the fact that the blood and other excess liquids can flow out of the damaged area. There is typically a large amount of bruising due to the blood being up closer to the skin and will typically heal faster if various types of Massage Therapies or Physiotherapies are explored.
If possible it is best to see your doctor immediately. If you cannot you should use the RICE regime for the best recovery. The RICE regime consists of Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. After a few days you will be better able to assess the damage done and if the swelling has not significantly decreased then you probably have an intramuscular tear. If you see a lot of bruising, the swelling does decrease, and you are still able to slightly flex the muscle it is most likely an intermuscular tear. It is important to have injuries checked by your doctor to make sure the muscle does not become misaligned during the recovery process. If the muscles heal incorrectly it may cause another injury in the future during work or exercise and could cause permanent damage to your leg.
Due to the nature of the injury, it is difficult to prevent a corked thigh as blunt damage usually occurs quickly, often by surprise. There are multiple steps you can take in order to best protect yourself from this type of injury. When playing sports it is important to always wear the correct protective gear and that it is a good fit. Make sure you understand all the rules of a sport if you are unfamiliar with them or are playing with more experienced players. This way you can know what exactly to be looking out for and protecting yourself from. If you are experienced in an extreme sport make sure to know your limits and stay within those boundaries enough to protect yourself from serious harm. A fall onto something such as a rail or bench could cause serious damage to your thigh.
